A Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to cover qualified expenses that you would normally pay out of your pocket with post-tax dollars. It may be used for medical, dental or vision care expenses not reimbursed by any other benefit plans. These expenses may include the deductible, coinsurance, or costs not covered by the plan.

You pay no federal or state income taxes on the money you place in a FSA

Pre-tax deductions to the FSA are deducted from your paycheck each pay period

Expenses must be incurred between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31

You must enroll in the FSA each year, even if you already participate

The IRS has a strict “use it or lose it” rule. If you do not use the full amount in your FSA, you will lose any remaining funds

Once you enroll in the FSA, you cannot change your contribution amount during the year unless you experience a qualifying life event

You cannot transfer funds from one FSA to another

Note: If you are enrolled in the UMR Silver or UMR Gold with HSA, you may NOT contribute to the Health Care Flexible Spending Account.
